Lanark District 29: County of Lanark and the Town of Smiths Falls
For over 35 years, The Retired Teachers of Ontario/Les enseignantes et enseignants retraités de l’Ontario (RTO/ERO) has provided excellent programs and services for teachers and administrators in retirement.
A bilingual and voluntary organization, The Retired Teachers of Ontario offers numerous benefits to members. These include: pension protection; health care coverage; a Long Term Care Plan; advocacy on social, political and economic issues; group travel programs; community involvement; and regular communication from both Provincial and District levels.
RTO/ERO provides a strong and active voice for a membership of 60,000 members. Members range in age from 51 to 100 plus and include 4,000 associate members, most of whom receive spousal pension as widows or widowers of retired Ontario teachers.

RTO Lanark District 29 is part of this larger provincial organization with a membership of 422 Members, both Full and Associate Members. It encompasses the geographical area of the County of Lanark. As members of RTO/ERO we are truly proud of the diverse nature of our rural communities.
RTO/ERO membership is open to all individuals who have been employed by and are retiring from an educational institution: office administrators, custodians, educational assistants, college instructors and university professors.
Included in membership in RTO/ERO are the programs and services offered by the District, namely,
- Pension protection
- Communications through the District Newsletter and Web Site
- Political Advocacy on issues affecting our members and seniors
- Social events like our "To Hell With the Bell Luncheon" on the first day of school, Fall Luncheons
- Recreational activities like our Spring Dance and Fun Golf Tournament
- Travel opportunities
- Service-to-Others Community projects and
- Service-to-Others provincial scholarships

MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIESMembership in RTO/ERO is available in two categories: Full and Associate.
Full Members
Retired teachers who meet the following criteria are eligible to become full members of RTO/ERO:
- A retired teacher who is receiving a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan
Associate Members
Individuals who meet one of the following criteria are eligible to become associate members of RTO/ERO:
- A retired teacher who is receiving a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, and whose spouse is a Full member of RTO/ERO
- A retired teacher who opted for a deferred pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan
- A retired teacher who opted for the commuted value of his/her contributions to the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan
- The surviving spouse of a Full or Associate member who is not eligible to receive a teacher's pension
- A retired educator who is receiving a pension from a University or College in Canada
- A retired teacher who is receiving a pension from a teacher's pension fund outside Ontario
- A non-educator divorced spouse of a Full or Associate member
- A non-educator employee of an Ontario School Board or educational organization
- A person who holds a teaching certificate and, upon retirement, will be eligible to receive a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan
- A person who holds a teaching certificate, who is not retired, is contributing to the Ontario Public Service Pension Fund or equivalent in a Canadian jurisdiction outside Ontario
- A person who holds a teaching certificate, who is not retired, is contributing to an Ontario University or College Pension Fund or equivalent in a Canadian jurisdiction outside Ontario
MEMBERSHIP FEESFees are collected on an annual basis.
Full Members
$1.20 per $1000, or major fraction thereof, of gross annual pension.
Associate Members
$0.96 per $1000, or major fraction thereof, of gross annual pension, for:
- A surviving spouse of a Full or Associate member who, in his/her own right, is not eligible to receive a teacher's pension
$30 for:
- A person who holds a teaching certificate and, upon retirement, will be eligible to receive a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
- A person who holds a teaching certificate, who is not retired, is contributing to the Ontario Public Service Pension Fund or equivalent in a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
- A person who holds a teaching certificate, who is not retired, is contributing to an Ontario University or College Pension Fund or equivalent in a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
$47 for all other Associate member categories
