For over 35 years, The Retired Teachers of Ontario/Les enseignantes et enseignants retraités de l’Ontario (RTO/ERO) has provided excellent programs and services for teachers and administrators in retirement.

A bilingual and voluntary organization, The Retired Teachers of Ontario offers numerous benefits to members. These include: pension protection; health care coverage; a Long Term Care Plan; advocacy on social, political and economic issues; group travel programs; community involvement; and regular communication from both Provincial and District levels.

RTO/ERO provides a strong and active voice for a membership of 60,000 members. Members range in age from 51 to 100 plus and include 4,000 associate members, most of whom receive spousal pension as widows or widowers of retired Ontario teachers.

Membership in RTO/ERO is available in two categories: Full and Associate.

Full Members

Retired teachers who meet one of the following criteria are eligible to become full members of RTO/ERO:
• a retired teacher who is receiving a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund
• a retired teacher who is receiving a pension from a teachers' pension fund in a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario.

Associate Members

Individuals who meet one of the following criteria are eligible to become associate members of RTO/ERO.
• a retired teacher who is receiving a pension in his/her own right from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund, and whose spouse is a Full Member of RTO/ERO
• a retired teacher who opted for the commuted value of his/her contributions to the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund
• a retired teacher who is not eligible to receive a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund
• the spouse of a Full or Associate member who, in his/her own right, is not eligible to receive a teacher's pension
• the surviving spouse of a Full or Associate member who, in his/her own right, is not eligible to receive a teacher's pension
• a retired educator who is receiving a pension from the Ontario Public Service or the equivalent from a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario
• a retired educator who is receiving a pension from a University or College in Canada
• a person who holds a teaching certificate and, upon retirement, will be eligible to receive a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
• a person who holds a teaching certificate, who is not retired, is contributing to the Ontario Public Service Pension Fund or equivalent in a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
• a person who holds a teaching certificate, who is not retired, is contributing to an Ontario University or College Pension Fund or equivalent in a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
• a retired teacher whose qualifications are from a country other than Canada
• the holder of a teacher's certificate who is employed under a form of contract that is not a Standard Form of Contract, and is a member of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan
• a non-educator divorced spouse of a Full or Associate member
• a retired non-educator employee of an Ontario School Board, who is in receipt of a pension
• a retired non-educator employee of an Ontario educational organization who is in receipt of a pension

Fees are collected on an annual basis.

Full Members

$1.20 per $1000, or major fraction thereof, of gross annual pension.

Associate Members

$0.96 per $1000, or major fraction thereof, of gross annual pension, for:
• A surviving spouse of a Full or Associate member who, in his/her own right, is not eligible to receive a teacher's pension

$30 for:
• A person who holds a teaching certificate and, upon retirement, will be eligible to receive a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
• A person who holds a teaching certificate, who is not retired, is contributing to the Ontario Public Service Pension Fund or equivalent in a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
• A person who holds a teaching certificate, who is not retired, is contributing to an Ontario University or College Pension Fund or equivalent in a Canadian jurisdiction outside of Ontario, and is a member of the RTO/ERO Long Term Care Plan
