Who is eligible to join RTO/ERO?
Do you, or will you (or does your spouse) receive a pension from the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP)? Did you work in a school or school board office and will you receive a pension from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), or the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS)? Were you a member of faculty at a University or College and receiving a pension? Then you are eligible! Full details are on the Membership Categories page.

I am an active teacher. Am I eligible to join RTO/ERO now, or do I have to wait until I retire?
Join now! If you will be eligible for membership upon your retirement you can become an associate member today. See the Membership Categories page for full details.

What are Districts and how do I know which one I can join?
RTO/ERO membership is divided into Districts based on geography. This allows members to participate in social, travel and leisure opportunities, become involved in political advocacy, and assume leadership roles on District Executives in their local area and with local members. Find which District you live in with our District Map.

Can I join more than one district?
Each member is only able to join one District, but there are often opportunities, organized by Districts or by the Provincial Office of RTO/ERO that allows you to socialize with members from other Districts!

Can I belong to a different District than the one I taught in or live in?
RTO/ERO has many members who have moved away from the area in which they taught in Ontario to a different area. Members may choose to join the District that covers the area they taught in or live in, but can only be a member of one District. Contact a staff member at the Provincial Office for further information.

Whom can I contact with my questions about joining RTO/ERO?
A staff member would be happy to answer your questions. Please see our contact information for phone, email and postal information.

Membership Fees and Pension Plan

How much does it cost to join RTO/ERO?
There are full and associate membership options. See the Membership Categories page to find the option that best fits your needs.

Are the membership fees monthly or annual?
The membership fee is annual. Please note that in the first year of membership, the fees are pro-rated according to the month of enrolment. Our Membership Categories page has all of the details.

When are the membership fees deducted from my pension?
Your annual membership fee is deducted from your January pension payment for full members only.

Can I pay my membership fees by cheque or direct withdrawal instead of from my pension?
Yes! Please contact our accounting department for more details.

Why does RTO/ERO need my Social Insurance Number?
Many retired teachers share the same first name and surname, so by using members' SIN RTO/ERO ensures that pension deductions are taken from the correct person. The only use of a member's SIN is in electronic communication with the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board database for membership fee deduction purposes and for health insurance premium deduction purposes.

Please be assured that RTO/ERO is committed to the safety and security of members' personal information and as such members' SINs are converted into an RTO/ERO unique identification number that is stored in an RTO/ERO database.

How can I increase the income tax that is deducted from my pension?
Please speak directly with the Ontario Teachers' Pension Board. RTO/ERO does not have the ability to change members' tax deductions.

How many days per year may I continue teaching in retirement without it affecting my pension
Please speak directly with the Ontario Teachers' Pension Board for current information.
